Why Williamsburg's Holiday Season Lands on the First Weekend of December

October 29, 2026

Between Thursday, Dec. 3 and Sunday, Dec. 6, 2026, Williamsburg packs the Community Christmas Tree Lighting, the first Celebration of the Yule Log, the first Grand Illumination and the Greater Williamsburg Christmas Parade into four straight evenings. The Williamsburg Christmas Market runs on Court Street on all four of those days. Colonial Williamsburg, the Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce, CultureFix and Merchants Square each publish their own calendar, and their dates converge on that week.

That convergence explains how the whole season is built. Most of what Williamsburg offers in December runs on a weekly loop that repeats three times. The two community-wide openings that happen only once, the Community Christmas Tree Lighting and the parade, both fall in that first week. If you live here, the real decision is whether you want those openings or the repeating events, because only one weekend has both.

Four evenings, four organizers

Here is the first week of December as the organizers have published it for 2026.

Day Evening anchor Organizer Also running
Thu., Dec. 3 Community Christmas Tree Lighting, Courthouse Steps, 5:00 to 5:30 PM Colonial Williamsburg Artful Winter Ornaments at the Art Museums, 5:00 to 7:00 PM; Christmas Market, 11 AM to 6 PM, free on Thursdays
Fri., Dec. 4 Celebration of the Yule Log, Magazine Yard, 6:00 to 7:30 PM Colonial Williamsburg Christmas Market, 11 AM to 7 PM
Sat., Dec. 5 Grand Illumination, Capitol and Palace, 5:00 to 7:00 PM, fireworks at 7 PM Colonial Williamsburg Christmas Market, 10 AM to 7 PM
Sun., Dec. 6 Greater Williamsburg Christmas Parade, 5:00 PM Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce Christmas Market, 11 AM to 6 PM

For every Colonial Williamsburg program in that table, the 2026 Holiday Planner uses the same access line:

Open to the public | No event ticket required

The Grand Illumination page has a "Get Tickets" button, but it leads to general Colonial Williamsburg admission, not a separate Grand Illumination ticket. The planner's wording is the one to rely on.

The Chamber wants this year's parade to stand out. The 2026 theme is "Twinkle Through Time," and floats are invited to recreate historical moments, from a Victorian winter scene to a moon-landing celebration. The parade has been a Williamsburg tradition since 1953, and the Chamber says last year's drew more than 20,000 people. Entries filled up early: the Chamber's parade page says applications have moved to a waitlist after an unusually high number of entries.

What repeats, and what doesn't

The first week stands out because the rest of December reruns most of it. Sort the season's evening programs by how often they happen and they split cleanly:

Happens once:

  • Community Christmas Tree Lighting, Thursday, Dec. 3
  • Greater Williamsburg Christmas Parade, Sunday, Dec. 6
  • Firing of the Christmas Guns, Thursday, Dec. 24

Repeats each week through Dec. 20:

  • Artful Winter Ornaments, Thursdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17
  • Celebration of the Yule Log, Fridays, Dec. 4, 11 and 18
  • Grand Illumination, Saturdays, Dec. 5, 12 and 19
  • Williamsburg Christmas Market, Dec. 3 to 6, Dec. 10 to 13 and Dec. 17 to 20

So the weekends of Dec. 10 to 13 and Dec. 17 to 20 offer the same Thursday, Friday and Saturday rhythm as the first week, without the tree lighting on Thursday or the parade on Sunday. Colonial Williamsburg describes Grand Illumination as a tradition held "on three consecutive Saturdays in December," with Fifes & Drums, storytelling, puppetry, cresset lighting and two simultaneous 18th-century-style fireworks displays at the Capitol and the Governor's Palace. Nothing in the planner says the program changes from one Saturday to the next.

That makes the later Saturdays a full Grand Illumination on a weekend with fewer competing events. If what you care about is the fireworks, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 deliver them. If the parade or the community tree is what makes the season for your household, only one week will do.

The Christmas Market's pricing suits a repeat visit. CultureFix lists free admission on Thursdays and a one-time $5 admission Friday through Sunday. Admission is free for anyone 18 or younger and for students with ID, and train rides and the petting zoo are included. The market has 40 vendor chalets on Court Street beside Bicentennial Park, behind Colonial Williamsburg's Art Museums, with entrances at Henry and Nassau streets. A Thursday at the market pairs well with Artful Winter Ornaments at the Art Museums next door, which runs 5:00 to 7:00 PM on the same three Thursdays.

Where the overlap gets physical on Dec. 6

On the parade Sunday, the calendars overlap on the same streets. The Chamber's route starts at Richmond Road and Brooks Street, turns left on Duke of Gloucester Street, right on Henry Street, left on Francis Street, and ends at Nassau Street. The Chamber says that is the same route as last year. The Christmas Market's two entrances are on Henry and Nassau. The market's Sunday hours run until 6 PM, and the parade steps off at 5 PM.

Colonial Williamsburg's landscape design team also fills that weekend's afternoons. Its horticulture workshops at the Landscape Design Studio, 500 Packets Court, include a wreath decorating class, $90 a seat, on Saturday, Dec. 5 and Sunday, Dec. 6 from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. A small centerpiece class, $50, runs Sunday, Dec. 6 from 12:30 to 2:00 PM. The planner caps each class at 14 participants, requires a separate paid ticket, and notes that guests must get themselves to the studio. A 3:00 PM wreath class on Saturday ends 30 minutes before Grand Illumination begins across town.

For Grand Illumination nights, the planner recommends parking near the Historic Area. If you park at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center, it says to check the bus schedule. Every Grand Illumination is weather permitting.

November is the quiet lead-in

Before the December rush, a few smaller events run with little else around them.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg opens Christmas Town on Friday, Nov. 13, on select dates through Jan. 3, 2027. New this year, Verbolten: Forbidden Turn runs during Christmas Town for the first time. Christmas Town is ticketed separately, though certain memberships and passes include it. Busch Gardens lists a Christmas Town Fun Card at $89.99 for unlimited visits. With roughly three weeks before the Historic Area's December programs start, the park has the first stretch of the season to itself.

Thanksgiving weekend brings the first downtown events. The Christmas Market opens its first block on Nov. 27 to 29. Merchants Square holds its annual Tree Lighting on Saturday, Nov. 28, from 5:00 to 5:30 PM, with the Fifes and Drums, the Colonial Singers and Father Christmas. The planner's detailed listing puts the Lighting of the Cressets on Duke of Gloucester Street from 6:00 to 9:00 PM on Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28. Cressets are metal baskets of burning wood on poles, an early form of street lighting. On Nov. 28, that puts two lightings in one evening: the Merchants Square tree at 5 PM and the cressets from 6 PM.

The planner lists the cressets on two different sets of dates. Its calendar section also shows Nov. 26 and Dec. 1, which are missing from the detailed listing. Check Colonial Williamsburg's event calendar before planning an evening around those two dates. The planner itself notes that programming is subject to change.

The weekday programs around the loop

Colonial Williamsburg also has daytime and late-season programs that sit outside the weekend pattern. The Centennial Craft Party, billed as "Happy 100th CW!", runs Wednesdays, Dec. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, from 10:15 to 11:45 AM at the Art Museums, with no event ticket required. The name reflects how the Holiday Planner frames 2026: as both the nation's 250th anniversary and the Foundation's 100th.

On Christmas Eve, the planner lists the Firing of the Christmas Guns at Magazine Yard from 5:00 to 5:45 PM, followed by the cressets again from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The cressets return once more on Saturday, Dec. 26. That makes the season's last Historic Area evenings as unhurried as its first.

What hasn't been announced yet

A few details for the busy week haven't been posted yet. The Chamber's parade page says more route details and announcements are coming. Colonial Williamsburg says this year's Grand Illumination will include "heartwarming new additions," but hasn't said what they are. Last year, the Foundation's detailed Grand Illumination release came out on Nov. 21, about two weeks before the first Saturday. If 2026 follows the same timing, a fuller lineup could arrive in late November.
